The Parable Of The Sower

As told by Erin Hill

Have you ever planted some seeds and watched them grow into plants? This story is a story Jesus told about a man who did just that. He was a farmer.

The farmer went to his field to plant some seeds he had bought. He scattered them around the field, and different groups of seeds fell in different places.

Some fell on the path, where they were eaten up by birds. Some fell on a piece of land where thistles grew and were plentiful. The seeds were choked by the thistles. Others fell on dry, poor soil, where they grew into shoots, but as soon as they put down roots and tried to grow, they died because the soil was too poor for them to put roots down that were strong.

But the very last seeds fell on good soil that was rich and moist. They could put good, strong roots down, and grew into large plants. They gave the finest corn when it came to harvest time.

And there Jesus paused. "These seeds are like God's kingdom. The seeds that fell on the path represent those who have never believed, who follow the smooth, easy path that leads to wickedness, not the rocky, hard path that leads to God. The seeds that landed where thistles grew are like people who say they believe but inside think only of money and greed. The other seeds fell on dry, poor soil. These seeds represent people who believe for a little while, but lose faith and diminish. They deceive you. The last seeds represent the last but definitely not least of God's people. They represent the people who believe with all their hearts. They represent the people who do what is right, who obey and are good. They will be the first to get a place in the Kingdom of God."

This parable's meaning is: The seeds that fell on good ground represent God's word. Be like those seeds.
